YU Shangyuan : Contemporary Drama educator and theorist, one of the founders of modern Chinese Drama
Yu Shangyuan was born in Shashi, Jingzhou City. After entering Peking University in 1912, he started his drama life. In 1923, he took his further study in Carnegie University and Columbia University. In 1925, Yu returned and set up drama department, and "China Drama Club" in Beijing. In 1928, Yu took the position of the Secretary of China Foundation for Education and Culture, he also served as the professor of arts of Peking University. In 1953, he visited Europe with Mei Lanfang. While the National Theatre School was established in Nanjing, Yu was appointed to be the president and the principal. He wrote many influential books on art. In 1948, he attended the first annual International Theatre Institute.
After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Yu gave lectures in many jey university in China. During this time, he wrote some books, such as Western Drama Criticism, Introduction to Drama and other lesson plans, translation of the "Dramatic Skills" and many other classics, contributing a lot to play and education in China.
