Jingzhou Ancient City
Jingzhou ancient city, also called Jiangling City, is one of the national historic cultural cities. The city covers an area of 4.5km2. There are better preserved ancient city walls and all together six city gates. There used to be city gate tower on each gate: on East Gate is Binyang Tower, on Small East Gate is Wangjiang Tower, on West Gate is Jiuyang Tower, on South Gate is Qujiang Tower and on Small North Gate is Chaozong Tower.
Among all the towers, the most famous ones are Qujiang Tower and Jinglong Tower. In ancient time, the South Gate was located on the Yangtze River. When Zhang Jiuling, the prime minister in Tang Dynasty, was relegated to the attendant officer of Jingzhou, he went to the tower of South Gate a lot to enjoy the beautiful view of Yangtze River. Jinglong Tower is on Liumen Gate (the Large North Gate), outside the ancient Liumen Gate used to be a thoroughfare which leaded to the capital, it’s the vital communication line of Jingzhou. Due to the large number of sightseers, it earned a lot of fame.
City Gate Tower
The ancient city of Jingzhou can be divided into three parts: outside is the water city, in the middle part is the brick city, and inside is the soil city. It is said that, to prevent the base course sinking and flood inundating, glutinous rice starch was poured into the gaps of squared stones at the foot of the wall.
Traffic: Jingzhou’s transportation is under good condition. Wuhan is 179km from here, and they are connected by expressway. 483km of Yangtze River flows through here. Shashi harbor is an important docking point for passenger liners. Railways link Jingzhou to the whole nation, while Shashi Airport has flights which can fly to some of the big and medium cities.
The Three Taoist Temples of Jingzhou
Xuanmiao Taoist Temple
Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level. It’s located at Jingbei Road in the central city of Jingzhou City, Hubei Province. At the west side of inner Small North Gate area, the city wall is in its north. It is a famous historical site and a tourist attraction of Jingzhou. Built in Kaiyuan Period of Tang Dynasy, the name of Xuanmiao Taoist Temple has been changed for several times. In 1009AD, Emperor Zhenzong in Song Dynasty issued an imperial edict to change its name into Tianqing Taoist Temple. In 1297AD, Emperor Cheng of Yuan Dynasty reserved its name back to Xuanmian Taoist Temple. In 1339AD, Emperor Shun of Yuan awarded it a “Nine Gods Temple” inscription. In Qing Dynasty, to avoid the tattoo of “Xuan” in Xuanye, the almighty Emperor Kangxi’s name, its name was changed into Yuanmiao Taoist Temple.
Taihui Taoist Temple
Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level. On the Taihui Mountain ouside the West Gate of Jingzhou city wall, Jingzhou City, Hubei Province, it is 3km far from Jingzhou. It is a historical site and a tourist attraction of Jingzhou. Taihui Taoist Temple is a palace built by Zhu Bai, the Xiangxian King in Ming Dynasty. It’s built in the 26th year of Hongwu (1393AD). The scale and decoration of this palace were above the hierarchy at that time (such as stone pillars with dragons on them). When the construction was almost completed, someone delated Zhu Bai, said that he had the intention to rebel. Zhu Bai was terrified, so he changed the palace into a Taoist temple and named it “Taihui”. In the 8th year of Chongzhen, the temple was rebuilt. It is praised as “among all the gorgeous palaces, it’s the only one that can rank the first in Jingchu”. In ancient time, there were visitors all over the place when dusk fell in spring time. In woodland, acrobatics were on and beautiful songs were sung by excellent singers. Cheers and laughter remained all night long. Visitors came in all four seasons. Friends came together without caring their hungry bellies; they rowed into the woods with breeze along their sides. They had so much fun and even forgot to go back home.
Kaiyuan Taoist Temple
Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level. Located at Jingxi Road in central city of Jingzhou City, Hubei Province, it is a historical site and a tourist attraction of Jingzhou. It’s built in the Kaiyuan period of Tang Dynasty (713AD-741AD), so it’s named Kai
yuan Taoist Temple. The existing buildings were rebuilt in Ming and Qing Dynasty. It has three temples, the front is the Leizu Hall, middle is the Sanqing Hall, and backmost is the Zushi Hall.
Wanshou Garden Wanshou Garden is located at the side of the ancient Guanyin Rock Spur of Jingjiang River Dam, Shashi District, Jingzhou City. Because of “the top rock spur of great Yangtze River” —Guanyin Rock Spur built in South Song Dynasty, and the Wanshou Pagoda built in Jiajing period of Ming Dynasty, the Garden attracts a lot of tourists both domestic and overseas. By the river, the Wanshou Garden is surrounded on three sides by Jingjiang River. It covers an area of over 16,000m2. Inside the garden, we can see buildings all designed in the style of ancient Ming, quite and elegant, exquisite and ingenious. Best scenes for visitors to relax and enjoy. It’s a National AAA Tourist Attraction.
Wanshou Pagoda, the iconic landmark of Wanshou Garden, was built in Jiajing period. Built of bricks, it’s over 40m with seven stories. Each story is covered by figures of Buddha in a total number of 87. On top of the pagoda is a gilded copper Tasha with the full text of Vajracchedika-sutra.
Jingzhou Zall City
