Honghu City-Hurunui District, New Zealand

Hurunui District is a territorial local government district on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island, north of Christchurch (also know as Christchurch). With an area of 8,660.43 square kilometers and a permanent population of 12,700, the district has an agreeable climate, a beautiful environment, as well as rich agricultural and tourism resources.

Hurunui District is the hometown of Rewi Alley, a great international fighter. He, tightly bound to Honghu, visited Honghu five times from February 1932 to 1983. He extracted the spirit of Honghu and brought Honghu people together spiritually.

Eugene Feng, Economic Relations Manager-Asia at Canterbury Development Corporation, visited Honghu from April 2004 to 2015, expressing his willingness to push for the establishment of friendly relations and promote economic, trade and people-to-people exchanges between Honghu and Hurunui District. Xia Guanghong, former Deputy Secretary of the CPC Honghu Municipal Committee, accompanied leaders of the Policy Research Office of the CPC Hubei Provincial Committee to visit Christchurch in December 2014.

At the invitation of the Hurunui District Council, Shen Xianwu, Mayor of the Honghu Municipal People's Government, led a delegation and accompanied Wang Xiaodong, Governor of the Hubei Provincial People's Government to visit New Zealand from March 22 to 26, 2017. On March 23, he signed an agreement of intent on friendly exchange and cooperation with Winton Dalley, Mayor of Hurunui District at the residence of Jin Zhijian, Chinese Consul General in Christchurch. Under the agreement, the two sides will, on the basis of equality and mutual benefit, carry out exchanges and cooperation in fields such as tourism, agriculture, education, culture, commerce and people-to-people exchanges, to achieve co-prosperity. During the visit, the Honghu delegation inspected the damage of the earthquake to Christchurch and Hurunui District, as well as post-quake reconstruction, and donated 10,000 New Zealand dollars for the post-quake reconstruction of Hurunui District. At the New Zealand-Hubei Investment and Trade Promotion Conference, the Honghu delegation exchanged ideas with government officials of Hurunui District on environmental protection, resource recycling and other fields.

The New Zealand celebrity delegation of the New Zealand China Friendship Society (NZCFS) visited Honghu from April 23 to 24, 2017. They visited Rewi Alley Memorial Hall, Memorial Hall for Revolutionary Martyrs in Western Hunan-Hubei Soviet Area and Honghu No. 1 High School, exchanging views on deepening the friendly cooperation between the two sides.

John McKinnon, Ambassador of New Zealand to China; George Andrews, Vice President of NZCFS and Mary Black, Deputy Mayor of Hurunui District were invited to attend Rewi Alley Statue Unveiling Ceremony and visit Rewi Alley Memorial Hall in Honghu on November 22, 2017.

In December 2017, New Zealand and Honghu jointly built Garden of Reflection in Hurunui District, New Zealand China Friendship Bridge funded by Honghu opened.

Patsy Reddy, Governor-General of New Zealand, unveiled Garden of Reflection and Friendship Bridge along with Hubei's college students.

Winton Dalley, Mayor of Hurunui District, wrote to Shen Xianwu, Mayor of the Honghu Municipal People's Government in November 2019, telling that Pounamu Touchstone of Friendship was set up in New Zealand to promote the long prosperity of the friendship between Hurunui and Honghu. Jin Zhijian, Chinese Consul General in Christchurch, attended Pounamu Touchstone of Friendship Unveiling Ceremony.
