Updated: 2013-08-29 10:24:32

After more than three months’ collection of concept plans on the conservation and utilization of the Ancient City from the public home and abroad, experts renowned in fields like urban planning, conservation of historic cities and tourism reviewed the plans this morning (Aug, 14).
At the review meeting, the mayor Li Jianming expressed thanks on behalf of the municipal government to domestic and foreign experts and organizations that have taken part in this planning for their contribution to the development and construction of the city. “Domestic and foreign experts and units have proposed advanced designing concepts and plans for the conservation and utilization of the Ancient City. Jingzhou will study these concepts and plans, perfect the planning and lay basis for further deepening the planning for the Ancient City’s conservation and utilization.
In recent years, Jingzhou has solved various problems concerning the conservation of the Ancient Wall, such as handling cracks and collapses caused by waterlog, maintaining broken stretches of the wall, eliminating heritage security risks and making plans for the evacuation of residents inside the Ancient Wall. Despite these efforts, the contradiction between the rapid development of the city and the conservation and utilization of the Ancient City has got increasingly serious. Against this background, on May 2, Jingzhou started to collect concept plans on the conservation and utilization of the Ancient City from the public home and abroad, which has caused great attention in this field. During the collecting period, Jingzhou has received 81 documents from domestic cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Wuhan, etc. and foreign countries such as Australia, the UK, France, the US, Italy and Spain, etc. This is the first time in Jingzhou’s history that international planning organizations participate in the planning and conservation of the Ancient City. Experts gathered in Jingzhou to verify and evaluate the qualification of these 81 planning, and 10 of them got into the second round of evaluation. At last, 5 plans were chosen for the conservation and utilization of Jingzhou Ancient City, including Shanghai Tongji Urban Planning & Design Institute, Progetto (Beijing) Architectural Design Consultants Co., Ltd, and Tianjin University Research Institute of Architectural Design & Urban Planning, etc., which are all ranked first-class home and abroad.
In today’s review, each of these 5 units chosen at last made special reports on their own design concepts.
Ma Qiuping, deputy mayor; Xiao Xiying, Municipal Secretary General; and Wan Xinkuan, inspector sent by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, etc. also participated in the review meeting.
