Greenways, as a kind of linear green open space, are usually established along the natural and man-made corridors, such as riverside, valley, ridge and scenic roads, etc., in which recreational landscape lines can be set up for pedestrians and cyclists to enter. Greenways, as the city’s “Wind Channels”, extending from country to urban center, are endowed with ecological relation functions, can improve urban heat island effect and living conditions and conform to the development requirements for Low-carbon Cities.

The Review Meeting on Greenway Planning Scheme for Jingzhou Central Urban Area, Planning Scheme for Urban Garden Greening Tree Species in Jingzhou City was held on June 13, the leaders and experts from Provincial Housing and Construction Department, the specialists from College of Landscape of Yangtze University, etc., were present at the Review Meeting, listened to the specific conditions related to planning scheme, and put forward some suggestions. As for the Design Department of Jingzhou City, “riding in secluded paths” has become an object of greenway planning of Jingzhou City.

The Double Cross Shaped Layout of Two Rows and Three Columns for Greenways

At present, the cities such as Wuhan, Yichang, Xiangyang within provincial scope, have been establishing greenways, therefore it is a great challenge for Jingzhou City to ensure its features in historical and cultural resources while outstanding its regional characteristics. The “Planning Scheme” points out that Jingzhou City, with good afforestation basis, having many rivers and lakes, plus profound historical and cultural deposits and abundant tourism resources, is a national garden city. However, the disordered traffic, insufficient width of road basic greenbelts and poor connection of scenic spots results into low cycling trip rate. The greenway planning for urban central area of Jingzhou city is based on the characteristics of being watery and pastoral garden in plain, combined with characteristics of distribution of natural and humanistic resources, forming reasonable layout and unlocked traveling trails, including many ecological, environmental friendly, green and healthy greenways, which can thoroughly demonstrate the regional landscape characteristics and cultural tradition and satisfy the local inhabitants’ requirements to improve life quality.

Combined with the real situations of Jingzhou city, the greenway planning will form a regional double cross shaped layout of two rows and three columns. Therein, “two rows” refers to the greenways in 318 National Road (urban section) and Yanjiang Road (urban section); “three columns” refers to the greenways in water diversion from Yangtze River to Han Canal (urban section), 207 National Road (urban section) and Xiangyang-Jingzhou-Songzi connecting line (urban section). By the establishment of greenway network of this region, the connection between Jingzhou greenway and provincial and municipal greenways is basically achieved. 



GREEN WAY AROUND THE ANCIENT CITY

The Total Length of City Greenways in Central Urban Area Reaches 318 Kilometers

The planning scheme points out that the urban area of Jingzhou city plans to design 17 city greenways with the total length of 318.25km, based on the function and spatial features of every section’s greenways. Taking one Riverside Style Greenway as a clue can outstand the characteristics belonging to riverside city; taking six Metropolitan Vigor Greenways as a bridge can embody the city’s vitalities and advocate the green living ideas; taking five Riverside Recreation Greenways as venation can improve city’s ecological and environmental qualities; taking two Ancient City Scenery Greenways as a link can demonstrate the style and features of ancient cities; taking two Wood Scenery Greenways as a skeleton can provide conditions for appreciating plants landscape; taking one Ring Lake Style Greenways as a highlight can provide conditions for visiting and appreciating ecological and beautiful scenery of rivers and lakes. Through 17 city greenways, the mountains, forests and cities are well connected, intensifying urban characteristics experience of watery and pastoral cities.
