Newprogress has been made in the ecological restoration of Honghu Lake Wetland. OnJanuary 5th, it was learned from the Wetland Center of the Provincial ForestryBureau that after the removal of the purse seine from the lake area in 2017,the project of demolishing embankments to enlarge the area of the lake and wetlandentered the substantive construction phase last month. According to the plan, all enclosing embankments within the Honghu National Nature Reserve, includingthose on the islands in the lake area and around the fish ponds on both sidesof the drainage sluice waterway adjacent to the reserve, with a total area ofnearly 133 sq.m., must be dismantled by January 31, 2021. The effort to protectthe ecology around Honghu Lake has entered a new phase.

Theecological restoration of wetland is a complex and systematical project. Inrecent years, the ecological function of wetland within our province has beenapparently restored through the construction of wildlife habitats, restorationof aquatic vegetation, construction of water conservation forests andrestoration of the original wetland ecology. For Honghu Lake, 80 sq.m. of waterweedand 27 sq.m. of natural lotuses have been restored, attracting nearly 100,000 moremigratory birds in winter. Wild soybeans and thick-stemmed ferns, second-classaquatic plants under state protection, have just been discovered there.

Amongthe threats to the water quality of Honghu Lake are also the large- and small-sizedembankments and ridging that exist in the Honghu Lake Basin. They are a hindranceto the water exchange and biodiversification of the wetland and also an indispensablecause for the high frequency of disasters occurring at Honghu Lake. In May2017, Jingzhou launched an investigation and made an overall plan for theproject of demolishing embankments to enlarge the area of Honghu Lake and itswetland. The business operators of those embankments listed in the project thatyear shall dispose of their embankments by themselves, remove subsidiaryfacilities, withdraw or evacuate from them and transfer them to the governanceof the county government by December 31 of that year. Appropriate rewards willbe given to those who complete the task within the prescribed time limit; thosewho fail to complete the task within the prescribed time limit will beevacuated according to law. Embankments that were not included in the projectthat year will be used for ecological breeding and drugs and fertilizers beyondthe standards will be strictly prohibited. Those involved in the project willbe subsidized and compensated by the local government according to law. No organizationor individual is allowed to change the current situation of the embankment. Nosubsidy or compensation will be granted to any embankment or facility set upafter the removal begins.

ZhuJunhua, Party secretary and director of the Honghu National Nature ReserveAdministration, said that they would strive to demolish all the embankmentswithin 3 years, restore the basic ecology in the demolished area within 5 yearsand truly reproduce the magnificent scenery of lapping waves over Honghu Lake.
