Striving to be the Main Force: the “Sea-River-Railway” Intermodal Transportation of the Jingsha Railway Reaches a New High

In recent years, the Jingsha Railway has served partof the steel enterprises based in southwest China and engaged in the intermodaltransportation of imported iron ore by sea, river and railway, with one ticket fora complete range of logistics transportation services, reducing logistics costsfor the enterprises. In 2018, the railway-water intermodal transportation businessof the Jingsha Railway continued to grow and achieved half the target in thefirst half of the year for the first time, thus bringing the total freightvolume of the year to a new high.

The Wanggang Wharf of the Jingzhou Port in the JingzhouEconomic and Technological Development Zone is where the command center of railway-waterintermodal transportation is located and it is a scene of hustle and bustle.Workers and porters are busy loading iron ore powder onto the trains from theyard. The iron ore powder of this batch totalled 100,000 tons. About 8,000 tonsof iron ore powder is transported to The Wanggang Wharf of the Jingzhou Port fromTaicang, Jiangyin and Luojing wharfs.

As the first local railway in Hubei Province, theJingsha Railway transported 4.08 million tons of freight in 2018, setting thehighest record in the history of the railway, achieving an output value of 338million yuan with a value-added tax of 29.92 million and bringing both economicand social benefits.

However, this 90-km railway line did suffer a sharpfall in transportation that caused huge losses for the company. In the mostdifficult period of time, people were “waiting for rice to cook.” In the faceof the unprecedented challenge, Jingzhou Railway Co., Ltd. decided to takeadvantage of the unique geographical location of the waterway of the YangtzeRiver to achieve “sea-river-railway”intermodal transportation. From “waiting for rice to cook” to “lookingfor rice to cook,” railway-water intermodal transportation has injectedvitality into the growth of the company. The Jingsha Railway is attractingattention from customers again, and the transportation volume is showing agradual recovery.

The Jingsha Railway connects to the Jingmen SouthStation of the Jiaoliu Line of the National Railway in the north and the ShashiSouth Station on the bank of the Yangtze River in the south. As an importantpart of Jingzhou’s transportation hub, the Jingsha Railway will continue tostrengthen the structural reform of the supply side, connect the city with theoutside world, integrate into the national railway network relying on itsgolden waterway, cooperate with the Menghua Railway to promote multipolarityfor Jingzhou’s development.
