Established in September 1960, the state-ownedSanhu Farm in Hubei Province is located in the hinterland of Jianghan Plain withthe total farm area of 63.81 square kilometers, and enjoys fertile and picturesquelyflat land.During the revolutionary war years, theChinese Red Army of Workers and Peasants and NEW 4 ARMY of the NationalRevolutionary Army led by the Communist Party of China had built red bases andanti-Japanese bases behind the enemy lines, sparking a raging revolutionaryfire. Over the past 60 years since the founding of the farm, Sanhu has thoroughlyremoulded itself in great hardship with the dedication and hard work ofgenerations of farmers for agricultural reclamation. At present, Sanhu Farm hasentered a crucial period of accelerating the reform of traditional agriculture,promoting agricultural modernization and speeding up the transformation andupgrading. Sanhu is originally a water name. As recordedin Commentary on the Waterways Classicof Daoyuan Li inthe Northern Wei Dynasty (368-534), Yangshuiflows to the northeast, with the injection of White lake water.The lake isin the north of Dagang, the south of which is called Middle Lake, and the lakebelow the Nandi is all called Guanhu Lake. These three lakes combine to a stripof water. Hence three lakes are named after “Sanhu”.
Wang Jiyin, 79 years old this year, is thefirst batch of famers for agricultural reclamation of Sanhu Farm,and the firstgeneration of tractor drivers. Looking back at the reclamation work in 1959, WangJiyin still remains fresh in his memory.
The photovoltaic power station on the lakeregion is a fishery-solar hybrid project introduced successfully by Sanhu Farm,through which power generation on water and underwater cultivation can beachieved.After the project is completed and put intooperation, it can not only produce a large amount of clean energy and generateobvious economic benefits, but also improve the energy structure of Jingzhouregion, and make contributions to the green mountains and blue waters ofJiangling County.
The year 2017 was the first year of theestablishment of "Two Districts and One Town" in Sanhu Farm, and acrucial year for speeding up the establishment of "Agriculture-TourismIntegration" and "theFour-Sphere Synchronous Plan"（Referred to as industrialization, informatization, urbanization andagricultural modernization）. In this year, Sanhu Farm followed theguiding principles of the Provincial Conference on Agricultural ReclamationWork, and the unified deployment of "Two Districts and One Center" pursuedby the county government of Jiangling County Party Committee. It prioritized"efficient, characteristic and ecological" agriculture and strived tobuild national modern agriculture demonstration zones.With theYellow Peach Flower-Admiring Festival and Picking Festival as the platform,Sanhu Farm made efforts to accelerate the construction of tourisminfrastructure, promote the development of all-for-one tourism, fully showingthe unique charm of "the hometown of Bing Zong (a painter in Kingdom ofSong), the hometown of yellow peach, and beautiful Sanhu".
Every year, nearly ten thousand people will beattracted to appreciate the Yellow Peach Picking Festival in Sanhu, includingtourists, media reporters and shutterbugs. But at the beginning of the reformand opening up, the planting area of yellow peach in Sanhu was very little. Withthe prosperity of the market economy, people have an increasing demand forfruit, turning sweet Sanhu yellow peach into a marketable product. But at thattime, the common people were still only willing to grow traditional grain,cotton and oil.
In order to guide the development of theyellow peach industry, Sanhu Farm boldly suggested that all farmers who plantedyellow peach could be subsidized by the government, as an attempt to encouragethe planting of yellow peach among the common people.Since then, alarge area of planting began on Sanhu yellow peach. From theoriginal 87 mu (a unit of area, =0.0667 hectares) to the present 10,000 mu, theyield per mu has increased from 1,000 jin (a unit of weight, =1/2 kilogram) to3,000 jin, and the farmer household from 12 to more than 800.The past over30 years have seen that yellow peach planting started from scratch and yellowpeach industry transformed from weak to strong.Since 2014,Sanhu has been continuously holding Peach Blossom Festival in spring and YellowPeach Festival in summer, expanding the popularity of Sanhu yellow peach and drivingthe experience tour and picking tour in the countryside. In this case, Sanhuyellow peach has become sought-after and fruit farmers can increase theirwealth easily.In 2018, the total output value of Sanhuyellow peach industry exceeded 100 million yuan.
