Splendid Jingchu and Ecological Garden Expo: Strolling the Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition Halls to Experience the Charm of Jingchu Culture

Intangible cultural heritage is an excellenttraditional culture passed down from generation to generation. Taking the leadin the protection and inheritance of intangible cultural heritage nationwide, Jingzhouhas established Jingchu Skill Inheritance Academy of Intangible CulturalHeritage and Jingchu Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum. In addition, JingchuCultural Experience Museum is especially set up in the Jingzhou Garden ExpoPark, and a variety of Jingchu intangible cultural heritages have beendisplayed in seven exhibition halls, like Han embroidery,lacquerware,flower arrangement and wood carving.

In the Jingchu Cultural Experience Museum ofGarden Expo Park, Yong’an Li, a folk craft master of Hubei Province, is showingtourists the technique of bas-relief wood carving. The work he is carving is The Weird and Odd Painting for EleganceCollection drawn by Zeng Fan, a contemporary master of traditional Chinesepainting.The exquisite carving technique of this grand old man has won people'sgreat admiration.

The bas-relief painting on old Phoebe zhennanS. Lee created by Yong’an Li inherits the traditional creative forms ofexpression like Shoushan stone carving, jade carving and bamboo carving withthe old Phoebe zhennan S. Lee as the carrier and historical famous paintings asthe blueprint. It integrates the traditional wood carving techniques with modernsculpture techniques, forming a new form of artistic expression - bas-reliefpainting.

Wood carving requires not only patience andcarefulness, but also profound artistic culture. Having studied this techniquemeticulously for nearly 40 years, Yong’an Li has now already emerged as arenowned folk craft master in the industry. Like Mr. Yong’an Li, the oldgentleman Xiansong Zhang also masters a unique talent- Han embroidery. As theinheritor of intangible cultural heritage at provincial level, he and hisapprentices spent over 4 months on embroidering a work as a gift to theNational Day.

"Han embroidery" has inherited thestitch and style of Chu embroidery and integrated the strengths of embroidery techniquesfrom various schools in the Northern and Southern Dynasties (420-589). Itoriginates from Shashi region, and spreads to Hankou in the late of QingDynasty, where becomes the center of Han embroidery afterwards. As one of the fourfamous embroideries in China except Suzhou embroidery, Hunan embroidery andSichuan embroidery, Han embroidery is now listed in National IntangibleCultural Heritage Protection List.

One embroidery technique called "cushionembroidery" is adopted in the works of old gentleman Zhang, using silkthread to embroider repeatedly on the silkily smooth satin surface to achieve therelief-like effect. Among them, most of the works express the implied meaningof good luck in Chinese culture.

During the Garden Expo, a total of over 30 worksof Han embroidery are displayed by Mr. Xiansong Zhang and his apprentices, theanimated character modeling and marvelous artistic skills of which haveimpressed the visitors on the spot and received their highly acclaim. 

Besides, Jingchu Cultural Experience Museumalso sets up numerous intangible cultural heritage exhibition halls such asflower arrangement, lacquerware, bronze ware and bamboo slips of Chu and paintingon silk, and each technique will empower the visitors to experience the charmof Jingchu traditional culture.
