Qianjiang’s Theme Day at Hubei (Jingzhou) Garden Expo: Visiting Cao Yu’s Hometown, Enjoying the Town of Crayfish

When it comes to Qianjiang, what first comes into people’s mind iscrayfish, big, meaty and tasty. On November 10, the second Hubei(Jingzhou) Garden Expo witnessed the launch of the “Theme Day ofQianjiang”. With folk performances, crayfish products and intangible culturalheritage projects among others forms, the event displayed the distinct food andagreeable views of Qianjiang. 

“Willow trees alongthe ancient Qianjiang routes, River and Sky in a Picture”. Today, thesecond Hubei (Jingzhou) Garden Expo saw the Theme Day of Qianjiang. Dance Loveof Crayfish kickstarted the day. Dancers dressed up as crayfish, dancing toconvey the delight of the cultivating and catching crayfish.

Locating itself in Jianghan Plain at central Hubei, with Han Shui to itsnorth and Yangtze River to its south, Qianjiang has been awarded the honorarytitles, including “Hometownof Cao Yu, Jianghan Oil City, Garden in Water Town, and Town of Crayfish”.Also, on the scene are folk songs and Flower Drum Songs among other wonderfulperformances with distinct local characteristics. 

Intangible cultural heritage is the excellent traditional culture handeddown from generation to generation. Quite a few local inheritors in Qianjiangshowed up and brought their works displaying the cultural heritage and thecharm of intangible cultural heritage.

Over recent year, the crayfish industry is in full swing in Qianjiang. Grilledcrayfish with mashed garlic, steamed crayfish, braised crayfish and marinatedcrayfish have become widely popular dish. Because of crayfish, Qianjiang hasbeen catapulted to be the “Town of Crayfish in China”, “Town of IntercroppingCrayfish and Rice in China”, “First Town of Crayfish Processing and Exportingin China”. 

Born in Qianjiang, Hubei, Cao Yu is a playwright and theatre educator,acclaimed as “China’s Shakespeare”. Cao Yu’s works bear great significance inthe history of the modern Chinese “spoken theater”, widely esteemed as a signof the maturity of modern Chinese drama. 

Sun Yuqiu, vice mayor of the People’s Government of Jingzhou and Liu Bingvice mayor of the People’s Government of Qianjiang, attended the event andtoured the Qianjiang Pavilion. The brilliant promotion events demonstrated thelocal customs and practices of Qianjiang, acting as exquisite letters ofinvitation to visitors.
