Good News! Through 35 Years of Scientific Research, Breeding of a New Silver Carp Variety Succeeds in Jingzhou
Updated: 2020-05-25 14:49:42

On May 15, the Yangtze River FisheriesResearch Institute, Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences announced a piece ofgood news: Through 35 years of non-stop scientific research by threegenerations of fisheries experts, the breeding of a new variety of silver carp, one of the four major Chinese carps in the Yangtze River, namely black carp, grass carp, silver carp and bighead carp, has achieved staged success inJingzhou city, and this scientific research achievement has taken the lead inthe world.

In a testing ground of the YangtzeRiver Fisheries Research Institute located in Yaowan Village of the JingzhouEconomic and Technological Development Zone, the reporter saw aquaculturefarmers from counties, cites and districts of Jingzhou and surrounding regionsbuying silver carp fry in the testing ground. Aquaculture farmers told thereporter that the new variety bred by the Institute is disease resistant andfast growing, and able to purify the water quality of fish ponds.

It’s learned that silver carp aremainly distributed in China, Mongolia and Russia, and inhabit the upper layerof trunk streams of rivers and accessory waters. As a typical fish varietymainly feeding on plankton with a short food chain, it plays an irreplaceablerole in improving the water environment, making it the second largest freshwaterfish species in China. However, its intolerance to low oxygen and low survivalrate have restricted the large-scale breeding and popularization of this fishspecies. To overcome this difficulty, since 1986, the Yangtze River FisheriesResearch Institute, as a state-level genetic breeding center of silver carp, has started to undertake the breeding work of new silver carp varieties.

Liang Hongwei, a research fellow fromthe aquaculture and genetic breeding research office of the Institute, introduced that in tackle this problem, researchers of the Institute havedeveloped strains of gynogenetic silver carp with sustainable reproductionthrough a few males existing in the second generation of gynogenetic silvercarp, combined with molecular marker-assisted selection technology. This hassuccessfully addressed the difficulty of the gynogenetic silver carp offspringin establishing strains. Since 2010, the Yangtze River Fisheries ResearchInstitute has started to conduct breeding tests of a new silver carp variety, which was named the Changfeng silver carp, in many provinces, including Hubei,Shaanxi and Zhejiang. Through ten years of tracking and observation, the newvariety features fast growth, a high survival rate and aquaculture in ponds andreservoirs, making it qualified for large-scale popularization and breeding. This has also symbolized the breeding of this new variety has achieved stagedsuccess in Jingzhou.
