Recently, the finalsof the Hubei High-Value Patent Competition 2019 ended. Three universitiesincluding Yangtze University, Wuhan University, and Huazhong University ofScience and Technology were shortlisted for the gold award.

A total of 269projects and units have participated in the competition, 50 of which enteredthe finals. After registration recommendation, form review, expert review, androadshow finals, winners of 22 gold awards and28 silver awards were selected. In the finals, all shortlisted projectspresented a 3-minute roadshow and a 3-minute oral defense. After theirpresentations, the jury graded each project from 6 aspects of “patentinnovation, technological advancement, patent protection, applicationeffectiveness, social benefits, technological development prospect andrelevance” and released the result. On top of that, the Hubei IntellectualProperty Bureau determined the winners and released the winner list on its officialwebsite on June 2.

The patent of “An Oil-Based Drilling Fluid forShale Gas Development and Drilling” submitted by Xu Mingbiao’s team fromHubei Cooperative Innovation Center of Unconventional Oil and Gas, YangtzeUniversity, was applied in 2013 and authorized in 2016. It has developed a setof oil-based drilling fluid systems suitable for shale gas long horizontaldrilling, which has been widely used in China's shale gas development anddrilling, creating a direct output value of more than 300 million yuan and taxprofits of tens of millions of yuan.
