Thanks to "13th Five-Year Plan": natural barrier becomes a major transportation channel and transportation boosts Jingzhou's development
Updated: 2020-11-02 11:46:17

Since the beginning of the "13th Five-Year Plan", Jingzhou has thoroughly implemented the spirit of President Xi Jinping's important speech made during his inspection in Hubei Province, seized the strategic opportunity of China’s efforts to build a comprehensive transportation corridor in theYangtze River Economic Belt and Hubei’s efforts to build itself into a strong transportation province, and issued the Three-year Plan for Building a Comprehensive Transportation System in Jingzhou. With strong determination and relentless efforts, it has kicked off the "Four Major Battles" and comprehensively promoted the construction of the three-dimensional comprehensive transportation system of "highway, railway, waterway, and airway", while constantly upgrading and improving its position as a national major channel.

On the Double Ninth Festival in this autumn, Gao Changbo, former director of Shishou Transportation Bureau who has been a retiree for 16 years, was on his way back to his hometown to visit his cousin. The vehicle was galloping on the Shishou Yangtze River Bridge, thanks to which the duration of the trip will be shortened from five or six hours in the past to 30 minutes now. The Bridge was opened to traffic recently.

Back in the 20th century, Shishou was the only county in the province where there was no Yangtze River bridge connected to both sides of the river. In this sense, the Yangtze River was a natural barrier for local people. From the south of the river toits north, one could only choose to cross the river by steam ferry. In the extreme weather of fog or storm, the steam ferry would not be in service, bringing the cross-bank exchanges to a grinding halt. Gao Changbo, who was then the secretary of the Party Committee of Jiangbei Dayuan District, had to spend half a day every time on the road for an in-city meeting. He cannot even remember how much time was wasted on the road. After Gao Changbo took office as the director of Shishou Transportation Bureau in 1990, the first thing he did was to prepare an application to build a bridge.

Five leaderships have been in office in the past thirty years. In 2019, the Shishou Yangtze River Bridge was finally completed and opened to traffic, realizing the century-old dream of 670,000 local people.

At the sametime, great progress has been made in the construction of Honghu Chibi Yangtze River Highway Bridge as more than half of the main bridge and mid-span have been completed, and 1,162 pieces of 30-meter precast box girders on the north bank of the bridge have been in place for its approach bridge, which has laid a solid foundation for further realizing the pull-through of steel beam erection and closure before the end of the year.

Prior to the"13th Five-Year Plan", all the eight counties and cities directly under the jurisdiction of Jingzhou were situated along the river, and there were not enough channels to cross the river. There were only two Yangtze River bridges over the 483-km Yangtze River section. Therefore, Jingzhou has built three Yangtze River Bridges, namely, Jingzhou Yangtze River Highway and Railway Bridge, Shishou Yangtze River Bridge and Honghu Jiayu Yangtze River Bridge, with an unprecedented construction speed and efforts, increasing the number of Yangtze River bridges to five and making them a key hub for Jingzhou’snorth-south communication and integrated development.

According to LuYouzhi, deputy Party secretary and deputy director of Jingzhou Transportation Bureau, there are currently five already-built Yangtze River Bridges in Jingzhou, one under construction and four in the pipeline. By the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan, there will be 10 Yangtze River bridges over the 483-km Yangtze River section.
