JCRPC Supports Archaeological Excavation Efforts at Sanxingdui Ruins
Updated: 2021-03-23 13:51:08

The Sanxingdui Ruins site is dubbed as "one of the greatest archaeological finds of mankind in the 20th century". Recently Chinese archaeologists have made an important discovery. As a participant, the Jingzhou Cultural Relics Preservation Center (JCRPC) sent an expert team to Sichuan for the rescuing preservation and repairs of unearthed cultural items.

After more than 5 months of efforts, archaeologists discovered 6 sacrificial pits and unearthed over 500 important cultural items, including pieces of gold masks, bronze masks, bronze trees and ivories. The discovery enriched people's understanding of ancient Shu culture.

To support cultural item preservation, Fang Beisong, Director of JCRPC, led a team to the archaeological site of Sanxingdui Ruins on March 18. The team discussed the plan to preserve cultural items, and attended the "Archaeology China" Major Project Work Conference in Chengdu on March 20. According to Fang, the unearthed cultural items are deteriorative and hard to repair. JCRPC undertook the preservation of unearthed lacquer ware and ivories. To date, few lacquer ware items, some wooden boxes and a large number of ivories have been discovered.

Over 100 ivories were discovered in the "sacrificial pit" near No. 4 pit. According to Wu Shunqing, JCRPC's expert who has long given instructions on culture item preservation on the site, to preserve cultural items temporarily, their surface is covered by plastic wraps and then wrapped in wet towels.

JCRPC's experts will devote themselves to the long-term archaeological excavation of Sanxingdui Ruins, preserve cultural items in time and carry out repairs.
