Updated: 2021-06-21 10:13:19

"'Pursuing Eternity: Conservation of Museum Collections in China' exhibition hosted by the National Cultural Heritage Administration and the Beijing Municipal Government was held at the Capital Museum last month. In combination with the content of the exhibition, domestic cultural heritage preservation experts were invited to give a series of lectures on the spot. In the 4th lecture held on the afternoon of June 19, Fang Beisong, director of Jingzhou Cultural Heritage Preservation Center, gave the lecture themed "Protection and Restoration of Unearthed Bamboo and Wood Lacquerware - Taking Jingzhou Cultural Heritage Preservation Center as an Example" to reveal the preservation and restoration concept and technology of exquisite cultural heritage.

The elegant and gorgeous bamboo and wood lacquerware cultural heritage are the splendid masterpiece of Chinese civilization. Most of unearthed bamboo and wood lacquer is waterlogged due to the high groundwater level in the south. Natural and drying volatilization will cause serious deformation or even damage to the bamboo and wood lacquerware. In addition, waterlogged bamboo and wood slips may be also oxidized and discolored due to contact with air after being unearthed. China has begun to study the disease problems of waterlogged bamboo and wood lacquerware since the 1960s. After decades of development and exploration, a relatively complete system of decolorization and dehydration methods for waterlogged bamboo and wood lacquerware has been gradually formed.

In this lecture, Fang Beisong combined the representative cases of Jingzhou Cultural Heritage Preservation Center in the preservation of unearthed bamboo and wood lacquerware, and introduced in detail the latest progress of the on-site preservation, cleaning, decolorization, dehydration, drying, shape righting, carcass restoration, lacquer painting and restoration of unearthed bamboo and wood lacquerware.

It is reported that Jingzhou Cultural Heritage Preservation Center is committed to the scientific and technological protection of unearthed bamboo and wood lacquerware, bamboo and wood slips, textile cultural heritage and other organic cultural heritage, as well as earthen ruins. It is one of the supporting institutions of the "Key Scientific Research Base of the National Cultural Heritage Administration for the Protection of Unearthed Wood and Lacquerware." Under the leadership of Fang Beisong and several senior cultural heritage preservation experts, the Jingzhou Cultural Protection Center has so far established 7 cultural heritage preservation workstations across the country, providing technical support for cultural heritage preservation for more than 90 heritage and museum institutions in 24 provinces and cities in China and implementing 160 cultural heritage preservation projects, enabling more than 6,000 pieces of wooden lacquerware, 120,000 pieces of bamboo and wood slips, and more than 500 pieces of textiles to "prolong life".
