A National 3A ScenicArea. As anational major cultural relic protection site, Wanshou Park is locatedat Guanyin Jitou, Jingjiang Grand Dam, Shashi District, Jingzhou, Hubeiprovince, a famous scenic area of culturalrelicsand Yangtze River flood-control historic record. Wanshou Tower in the park was built in the31thyear under the reign of Emperor Jiajing (1552) in Ming Dynasty. The tower has 7 storeys and aheight of more than 40 meters,with a tower body 20 meters above the Jingjiang Dam. On theoutside walls, there are 87 jade Buddha sculptures and 102stone tablets, with 2,347 pieces of bricks of sculpturepictures or letters of Man, Tibetan, Hui, Mongolian, and Han ethnics. The towerwas built by Zhu Xianjie, the 7th King of Liao Kingdom of MingDynasty, under the will of his mother, Mao, for a prayer of EmperorJiajing'slong life. That is where the name "Wanshou (ten thousand years)Tower" came from. The main feature of the tower is that after 450 years,the riverbed of Jingjiang River has kept rising, whichcauses the tower bottom situated 7 meters below theriver, creating a wonder of underground tower, making it unique among othertowers inChina. There are buildings like reception hall,Yishou Pavilion, Shou Garden, Nine-dragon Wall, Long Corridor, WangjiangPavilion, Buddhism Guanyin Godess Hall, Yingbing Tower, etc. There are more than 10,000 plants like ginkgo,wintersweet, cedar, metasequoia, pomegranate, osmanthus, etc. Guanyinji,a dam extending more than 200 meters into the river, was built in the SouthSong Dynasty, a flood-control project. It splits the water, slows down theflow, consolidates the bank stability, and plays an important rolein protecting the whole Jianghan Plain from the damage of Jingjiang River. Sothe project is highly concerned by all the governments in Chinese history. It becomes a national and even a world popular tourist spot on the flood season each year. On the dam, the Yangtze River water heightrecord line marked in 1998 and Jingjiang flood split line marked in 1954 arestill visible. For the memorial of 1998 flood-fighting, Jingzhou CPC Committee and government built a"98 Flood-fighting Memorial Museum" on the side of theGuanyinji Dam to remember the great victory in the fight against flood.
